If your analytics feel unfamiliar, it is because Google replaced Universal Analytics with GA4, a very different tool. Here is what changed and what to do.

What is the difference?

Universal Analytics was session based, built for a website led world. GA4 is event based and built to track users across websites and apps, with a stronger focus on privacy.

Why did Google switch?

Because behaviour moved across devices and apps, and privacy rules tightened. The old session model could not keep up, so Google rebuilt analytics around events and modelling rather than cookies alone.

What is different day to day?

Metrics and reports look different, some familiar numbers are gone or redefined, and reporting is more flexible but less familiar. It takes time to relearn, and old UA data did not carry over.

Is GA4 harder to use?

For many people, yes, at first. It is more powerful and privacy ready, but the learning curve is real and the default reports feel sparse compared with what people were used to.

What should you do now?

Universal Analytics is retired, so GA4 is the path forward. Make sure it is set up correctly, tracking the events that matter, and feeding your attribution and reporting. Talk to us if your setup needs a check.

Is Universal Analytics still available?

No. Google retired Universal Analytics, so GA4 is now the standard. Old UA data did not carry over.
