The AI summary at the top of Google is now the first thing many searchers read. Here is what it is and how to be one of the sources it names.

What are Google AI Overviews?

When you search on Google and see an AI written summary above the normal results, that is an AI Overview. Google generates it from multiple sources and cites some of them. It sits above the classic blue links, so it shapes the first impression on many queries.

How is that different from a featured snippet?

A featured snippet pulls one passage from one page. An AI Overview is written by a model that blends several sources into a new answer, then links out to some of them. You are no longer trying to be the single ranked page. You are trying to be one of the sources the model draws from and names.

How do you appear in an AI Overview?

By being one of the trusted, clearly written sources on the topic. Answer the question directly and early. Structure content so a passage can be lifted cleanly. Cover the subtopics people also ask about. Strong traditional rankings still help, because Google often draws Overview sources from pages already ranking well.

Do AI Overviews reduce your clicks?

Sometimes. If the answer is fully satisfied in the Overview, fewer people click through. But being cited keeps you visible and credible, and for anything where people want depth or want to buy, they still click. The worst outcome is being neither ranked nor cited.

How do you measure it?

Watch impressions and clicks in Search Console, and note which queries show an Overview. A drop in click through on informational queries with steady impressions is often the Overview absorbing the answer. Shift those pages toward depth and intent the Overview cannot fully replace.

What should you do now?

Keep ranking well, write direct answers, and structure content for extraction. The same work that earns Overviews also earns citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Treat it as one discipline, not three.

Are AI Overviews the same as SGE?

Yes. Search Generative Experience was the test name; AI Overviews is the rolled out version.

Can you opt out of AI Overviews?

You cannot control whether Google shows one, but you can influence whether you are cited by being a clear, trusted source.

Do AI Overviews use your existing rankings?

Often yes. Overview sources are frequently pages already ranking well, so traditional SEO still matters.

Will AI Overviews kill SEO?

No. They change what wins. Direct, structured, trusted content wins; thin content loses harder.
